Your Hospital Bag: What to Pack for Labor and Beyond

You’ve made it through the doctor's appointments, the morning sickness, and now, as your due date approaches, a new task emerges: packing your hospital bag.

But what should you actually put in it? The internet is full of endless lists, but you don't need to pack your entire house. The key is to pack for three main phases: during labor, postpartum recovery, and for the baby.

For During Labor

This is all about comfort and staying calm. Your focus should be on you.

Comfortable Clothing: A comfortable, loose-fitting dress or a labor gown can make you feel more like yourself. A cozy robe and slides are great for walking around. I got this oversized nightgown from Amazon and slides from luluLemon

What to pack for

Socks: Your feet might get cold! Pack a few pairs of warm socks.

Lip Balm: A must-have. Your lips can get very dry during labor.

Snacks and Drinks: While the hospital will have food, packing your favorite snacks like granola bars, fruit snacks, or crackers can give you a much-needed energy boost. A reusable water bottle with a straw is also a great idea.

Entertainment: Pack your phone and a long charging cable.

For Postpartum Recovery

After the baby is born, your body will be recovering.

Toiletries: Pack your toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, and moisturizer. Having your own products can make you feel more refreshed.

Pads: I bought Always ultra night xtra ones. They are great because of the wings.

Hair Ties and Headbands: These are essential for keeping your hair out of your face.

Nursing Bra or Tank Tops: If you plan on breastfeeding, pack a few comfortable nursing bras or tank tops. I bought myself few tank tops from Hugo Boss.

Comfy Clothes: Pack a few pairs of loose-fitting pajamas, sweatpants, or leggings. A dark color is a good idea as you might have some bleeding.

Going-Home Outfit: Choose a comfortable, loose-fitting outfit. Remember, you’ll still look about six months pregnant, so don't pack your pre-pregnancy jeans. I used my black maternity leggins and oversized t-shirt.

For the Baby

Going-Home Outfit: This is the big one! Pack a cute outfit. I used same pink outfit for my girls and I still have it, oldest one will turn 17 this year:).

Infant Car Seat: You absolutely cannot leave the hospital without a properly installed car seat. Have this ready to go in your car before you leave for the hospital.

Swaddle Blanket: The hospital will provide blankets, but bringing your own soft swaddle blanket can be a nice touch.

Nappies: Yes, you will need to pack nappies and cotton wool for your baby.

Final Tips Before You Go

Pack two bags: One for you and one for the baby. This makes things easier to find.

Keep it accessible: Pack with the items you'll need first on top.

Don’t stress too much about getting every single thing right. This is where your amazing partner steps in, transforming from a supportive presence into a vital supply line!
