Why Your Newborn Photography Session Should Include the Whole Family
When you think about a newborn photography session, it’s easy to imagine beautiful photos of your tiny baby — those little fingers, sleepy expressions, and all the details that change so quickly.
But your baby is only one part of the story.
“I don’t want to be in the photos…”
I hear this from mums quite often.
After pregnancy, childbirth and very little sleep, it’s completely understandable that being in front of the camera may not be at the top of your list. You might not feel like yourself yet, or you may simply want the focus to be entirely on your new baby.
And that’s absolutely okay.
You don't have to decide straight away.
During your newborn photography session, we can concentrate on your baby first. If, as the session goes on, you feel comfortable and decide that you'd like a few photographs with your baby, we can take them.
There is no pressure.
But there is one thing I hear again and again from families:
“I'm so glad I did it.”
Because when you look back years from now, you may not notice the things you were worried about at the time. You’ll see your baby in your arms. You’ll see the connection between you. You’ll see the love on your partner’s face. And you’ll have a photograph of the two of you together during a chapter of your lives that can otherwise become a blur of sleepless nights and newborn cuddles.
You can always decide which photographs you love later.
Your newborn session is for the whole family
I believe newborn photography should tell the story of your family, not just photograph your baby on their own.
That means there is plenty of time for:
Mum and baby photographs
Dad and baby photographs
Parents together with their newborn
Brothers and sisters meeting the new baby
Whole-family portraits
Beautiful little details of your newborn
Natural moments of cuddles and connection
If you have older children, they are very much part of the story too. We can keep things relaxed and allow them to interact with their new brother or sister naturally rather than expecting them to sit perfectly still.
Yes, your dog can come!
For many families, their dog is their first baby — so of course they deserve to be part of the photographs too.
If your dog is comfortable around the baby and the environment, we can include them in a few photographs and capture those lovely first moments together.
You know your dog best, so if they need a little break, a walk or some quiet time, that's completely fine too.
Why choose a specialist newborn photographer?
Newborn photography requires more than simply having a good camera.
A specialist newborn photographer understands how to work with tiny babies, how to create flattering and beautiful lighting, how to pose safely and comfortably, and how to recognise those fleeting little moments that make a photograph truly special.
The lighting, positioning, timing and attention to detail all come together to create images that you'll want to keep for generations.
Most importantly, your baby’s safety and comfort should always come first.
As a specialist newborn photographer, I take the time to create a calm environment where your baby can settle and your family can relax.
Sometimes the most beautiful photograph is the one that happens in between the poses: a tiny hand holding yours, a big brother looking at his new sister, Dad gently cuddling his baby, or Mum simply looking down at the little person she has been waiting to meet.
Those are the moments worth remembering.
You don't have to feel “photo ready”
If you're a new mum and you're thinking, “I don't want photographs of me right now,” please know that you are not alone.
You don't need to have perfect hair, a perfect body or feel completely confident in front of the camera.
You have just had a baby.
You deserve to be in your family's photographs too.
And you don't have to decide everything before your session. We can start with your newborn, see how everyone is feeling, and take things from there.
Years from now, you may be incredibly grateful to have photographs showing not only the beautiful baby you brought into the world, but the family you created together.
